Why the PAGE Contract Matters

And Why Being a Member Makes a Difference

I want to talk about something most general service employees in the City of Pueblo don’t think about until it’s too late - our union contract, the PAGE Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Even if you’re not a member, the protections in this contract affect your daily work life. But being a dues-paying member makes a real difference in keeping those protections strong.

1. In Colorado, Most Workers Are “At-Will” - But Not Us

In Colorado, most employees can be fired at any time for almost any reason. But the PAGE CBA changes that for employees in our bargaining unit.

It gives us real job protections and security. And while non-members might benefit from the contract, being a member gives you a voice in protecting and improving those rights. The PAGE contract only stays strong when we, the members, support it.

2. Discipline Must Be Fair

Our PAGE contract makes sure discipline is fair and consistent. It usually follows steps like:

  • Verbal warning
  • Written warning
  • Suspension
  • Termination

This gives us the chance to correct mistakes and ensures management can’t act arbitrarily.

3. Representation When You Need It

If you’re ever called into a meeting that could lead to discipline, the PAGE CBA guarantees:

  • The right to have a union representative with you
  • A chance to respond with support
  • Protection from unfair pressure

Being a dues-paying member strengthens this right because our union has the resources and backing to defend us.

4. A System to Challenge Unfair Decisions

The PAGE CBA includes a grievance and arbitration process. This means if the City violates the contract, we can formally challenge it with a neutral third party.

Non-members might benefit from this, but members are the ones keeping the system strong and enforceable.

5. Pay, Hours, and Benefits Are Protected

The PAGE contract sets clear rules for:

  • Wages and raises
  • Overtime and scheduling
  • Job duties and classifications

Non-members may enjoy these protections, but members negotiate, enforce, and expand them - and that benefits everyone.

6. Leave and Time-Off Protections

Our contract goes beyond what state law requires, including:

  • Paid leave accrual rules
  • Protection from retaliation for using leave
  • Guidelines for carryover or payout

Membership ensures these benefits are respected year after year.

7. Seniority Protects Us All

Seniority in the PAGE contract governs:

  • Layoffs
  • Promotions
  • Shift and overtime opportunities

Membership keeps these fair systems in place, ensuring employees are treated consistently.

Why Membership Matters

Even if non-members get some of the benefits of the PAGE contract, being a dues-paying member gives you a voice. Members negotiate the contract, enforce it, and defend it. Without active members, the protections we rely on can weaken over time.

The PAGE contract protects you - but membership protects the contract.

Final Thought

The PAGE CBA isn’t just paperwork - it’s a system of rights, fairness, and accountability in our workplace. And that system only stays strong when we, the members, support it.

If you want to help protect your job, your voice, and your future in the City of Pueblo, consider joining PAGE today. Membership isn’t just for you - it strengthens protections for everyone.
